Southaven is known as a very family-friendly community, due in part to its outstanding public schools. The DeSoto County School District focuses on the arts as well as academics and consistently rates as one of the state’s top districts. The district offers opportunities for distance learning and technical education, as well as enrichment programs for gifted students. Area private and parochial schools include Southern Baptist Educational Center, Sacred Heart School and Bishop Byrne middle and high schools. There are numerous excellent post-secondary institutions nearby as well, most notably the DeSoto Center. Located on a 36-acre site in Southaven, the DeSoto Center is home to the Northwest Mississippi Community College and a satellite campus of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).
Known as the “Gateway to the Mississippi Delta,” Southaven offers much in the way of recreation and leisure, both indoors and out. There is world-class fishing to be found at Sardis and Arkabutla lakes, located right in Southaven’s backyard. Hunting is an ever-popular pastime as well, particularly in Arkabutla Lake’s wildlife management area. If you enjoy being outdoors---but not THAT outdoors---one of Southaven’s six golf courses might appeal to you. The Snowden Grove Park is the nation’s largest youth baseball facility and attracts families from across the country with its summer tournaments. Local baseball, hockey, and football teams play throughout the year, while a long legacy of local music lives on in blues clubs and country bars. Additionally, nearby Tunica County’s casinos are a mere half an hour away.
Southaven is also well known for its extensive parks system. In addition to Snowden Grove Park, the city is home to the Greenbrook Softball Complex, which hosts girls’ league softball. Also located in town is the Cherry Valley Complex, with sports fields, a dirt bike track, playground equipment, walking trails and more. There are 22 other parks in town, as well as the Snowden Home, an 18th century structure located at Snowden Grove Park.
Southaven is also a very festive town, one that understands what it means to build a community around good times that can be enjoyed by all. The city hosts a Fourth of July fireworks show, an annual Fishing Rodeo, a Christmas Parade, and a Farmer’s Market.
The town’s crowning achievement, however, is the annual Springfest celebration. Held the last weekend in April, the event is recognized as one of the best in the Southeast. Springfest is an all-around celebration of the city, including a carnival, live music, car shows, arts & crafts, and a “Happy Birthday Southaven” ceremony. But the main attraction, by far, is the Mississippi State Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. The contest attracts teams from all over the state and is a preliminary to the world championships in Memphis.
Speaking of Memphis, Southaven residents have easy access to all the attractions and amenities of this colorful city. Sports fans have the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies and the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, as well as the local minor league baseball team, the Memphis Redbirds. There are also auto racing, NASCAR, college sports and more. On a more subdued note, Memphis also houses a number of cultural attractions, including the Memphis Zoo, the Memphis Botanical Garden, the Children’s Museum of Memphis, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the National Civil Rights Museum, and the Planetarium. Frequent travelers will appreciate their proximity to Memphis International Airport. Memphis is also home to myriad restaurants, blues clubs, jazz and country bars, and tons of the little places you just have to fall into. There is also, of course, perhaps the most original attraction to be found anywhere in the country – Elvis Presley’s own Graceland.
